>> it looks like we will have some wet roadways for the monday morning commute. so far, the main focus of the rainfall has been on the north bay but that will be changing over the next three or four hours. santa rosa with .47 inches. san francisco is just getting into the action reporting .01. here is the satellite and radar. we have lots of clouds all day long. the green is starting to expand. up in the northern portions up toward santa rosa, petaluma, napa and vallejo, we have some coverage. darker shades of green brought in more of a steadier downpour. moving the maps closer to santa rosa, we will see some measurable rainfall. down toward marin county,

alamere beach, we are picking up some shower activity. it looks like we have some shower activity but nothing major. the south bay neighborhood still has some scattered showers. once again, here is the camera. you can see maybe a few more showers working their way into the area. tomorrow morning, here is the coverage. this is early tomorrow morning. here is monday morning commute. the main focus will be in the central portion of the bay. things will be changing by the afternoon hours. we will talk more about that coming up. now to the latest from washington, d.c. it was a day of negotiations on capitol hill. day two of the shutdown ended with another standoff. earlier today, it looked like the two parties were close to an agreement. senators took a proposal and minority leader chuck schumer

followed a 90 minute meeting this afternoon.>> this resolution would fund the government through february 8. schumer and mcconnell met for half an hour to discuss a deal but no compromise was announced. immigration and the daca debate still seemed to be at the center of the impasse. the deep divisions between the parties in hundreds of thousands of federal employees will be furloughed again tomorrow.>> senate leaders make -- mitch mcconnell and chuck schumer left the floor late sunday.>> let's step back from the brink. let's stop victimizing the american people and get back to work on their behalf. >> reporter: south elena senator lindsey graham said if they don't figure out tonight, it will be a lot harder tomorrow.>> to my democratic friends, don't overplay your hand. the government shutdown is not a good way to get an outcome legislatively.>> reporter: graham is among the republicans who voted with democrats

against the government funding package friday night. others in the group sent hopeful.>> when was the last time you saw 22 senators meeting day after day? the number of senators keeps growing with each meeting that we have. >> ultimately, my hope is that the bipartisan group of senators which has grown from 15 to 22 would continue to press that both sides have got to make compromises. >> reporter: republican leaders are willing to accept a three- week funding package. the house democratic leader called on president donald trump to help cut a deal.>> everyone of our solutions are on the path to an agreement. we want the president to come to the table and negotiate how we can do this in a very short period of time to open up the

government. >> reporter: there is concern on capitol hill that if this does not get figured out quickly, both sides could dig in and this could be a long shutdown.>> for people visiting new york city, the government shutdown through a wrench in their plans to taken some attractions. is visiting the statue of liberty would only see the monument from the ferry on the water. the landmark and nearby ellis island were both closed. but tomorrow, the two will reopen. the state of new york has arranged to pay federal worker salaries out of its own tourism budget.>> i know that the statue of liberty is a federally controlled memorial. it is a major income generator for new york state. we don't want to lose the income.>> tourists had better luck in washington, d.c. christian captain has a look in the bay area with the areas impacted by the shutdown.

>> reporter: visitors to alcatraz were happy to learn the rock was open but with some limitations. no national park rangers means no behind-the-scenes tours and no night tours.>> we booked a half day and a half night trip. they called me last night and told me it was canceled. i asked them if they were still doing day trips and they are doing a day trip today. they are going to refund our money. >> reporter: visitors to alcatraz say plans to visit the bay area icons were on the rocks.>> today, alcatraz is open. >> reporter: at the foot of the golden gate bridge, federal park police closed the road to fort point, forcing daring visitors to duck under the locked gate or admire the bridge at a distance.>> it is

immigration checkpoint.>> i am doing good. it is good to be back. i am excited to continue my education and show everyone what dreamers are made of.>> reporter: born in columbia, he came to the u.s. in 2009 on a visa when he was 11 years old. he did not qualify for protection under the daca program because he was required to have been living in the u.s. since 2007. for that reason, he was held in detention for over two weeks.>> we as americans have innocent people that were being treated worse than criminals.>> reporter: mora was considered undocumented because his visa expired in 2009. his lawyer finds it unusual he was detained for just overstaying a visa.>> they would not even allow him to

post bail which is ridiculous. he was being charged with an administrative violation. it is very much like getting a speeding ticket.>> reporter: with i.c.e. refusing to budge, supporters -- mora supporters started a wave of activism. a judge agreed to a minimum bond of $1500 which was posted on wednesday. mora believes his case highlights a broken system.>> this has given me a hope that the system will be able to change. not next year, but as soon as possible. we need a fix. there are so many people being criminalized when we are just trying to make this country better. >> reporter: the system is broken and the government is shutdown. both parties could not agree on daca reforms. i.c.e. released this statement. "i.c.e. will transfer his case to our

operations office in the area where he resides. his removal proceedings remain ongoing." an immigration judge has a final say at his deportation hearing which could take up to one year. he is determined to become a u.s. citizen. the message he wanted to share was that borders are not meant to separate us. he wants to continue his studies at uc berkeley and possibly become an immigration attorney. he has big dreams of becoming an immigration judge. rob malcolm, ktvu fox 2 news. president donald trump's new campaign that focused on illegal immigration and it is causing controversy.>> democrats who stand in our way will be complicit in every murder committed by illegal immigrants. >> the ad accuses democrats of being "complicit in the murders of police officers by illegal immigrants." the ad features a legal immigrant -- immigrants.

the republicans and a white house official are distancing themselves from this ad. mourners gathered tonight in the candlelight vigil to honor two and victims of a deadly crash. two sisters ages two and four died as a result of the record. the suspect in the case is in custody and facing murder charges.[ singing ] >> reporter: family members and supporters came together sunday evening to mourn the loss of two young girls.>> it has been devastating for the whole family. after days of being on life support, camilla cardoza died

after a stolen vehicle slammed into her mother's truck. her sister was also killed in the crash. family members are struggling to come to terms with what happened.>> this has been a nightmare that is unbelievable. it is hard to come to reality.>> reporter: the girls were riding with their mother when a man ran a red light and slammed into them. the crash happened on somers hill road wednesday afternoon. authorities say the suspect was allegedly trying to evade a contra costa county sheriff's deputy at the time of the crash. sheriff's officials say although the deputy had just turned on his lights and sirens, there was no active pursuit at the time. officials have charged the man with one count of murder and another count will likely follow this week. the girls mother suffered numerous injuries but is

expected to survive. >> a gofundme account has been set up on behalf of the family to help cover funeral expenses. police in san francisco arrested a 70-year-old transient for driving up onto a busy sidewalk and crashing into a building. kenneth rotter faces multiple charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault, hit and run and driving under the influence. around 3 pm yesterday, he jumped the curb, hitting multiple parking meters and trees and then he backed into a deli. the state of california will start issuing new real id driver's licenses tomorrow to comply with a federal mandate that requires more secure identification.>> the optional real id card is for californians who want to continue using their drivers license to board a domestic

flight or enter secure federal facilities.>> you will need to get the new id to get on an airplane in 2020. you still have plenty of time to get the new id. there is no need to rush into a dmv field office. a valid california drivers license or id card can be used for federal purposes including boarding a domestic flight, entering military bases or a secure federal facility.>> you will need to visit a dmv office to receive your new real id. vice president mike pence is on the final leg of his core -- tour in the middle east. david lee miller tells us there is still some tension in the

average price of $3.26. people in los angeles can now buy legal recreational marijuana three weeks after california launched legal sales. the first two stores licensed to sell the legal pot in la opens yesterday. the stores are under the madmen brand. it is the largest cannabis company in the state with six locations. the city approved two dozen dispensaries for legal adult sales one week ago but they still need the final licensing from the state. finally some rain back in the bay area forecast. the rain has not been expanding. coverage here is beginning to move to the south. as we come in closer, reports of heavier downpours focused onto the north bay. all the area shaded in green showing you the rainfall out toward napa and st. helena. these darker shades of green

closer to the napa region out toward sonoma and glenallen. look at this, we have a development with heavier downpours out toward montrial. finally, the front is getting its act together. we will move the maps closer to mill valley. continuing here with a tour out toward the east bay out toward oakland. finally, some development here. we have some rain showers onboard. things are starting to pick up in terms of the rainfall activity. current numbers are in the 50s with even a few upper 40s. santa rosa right now i 51 degrees. we have been watching this live camera at the bay bridge toll plaza. we do have some moisture hitting the roadways.

it is not a heavy rain but still enough to soak the roads. this will be a factor for your monday morning commute. overnight lows will be in the 40s across most areas. in san francisco, we have showers likely and then a chance in the afternoon hours. here is the deal. here is 3 am tomorrow. we have rainfall working its way into the area. by 7 am, it will still be out there. the commute home tomorrow will be much easier. here is a system for tonight. another one will be working its way into the area on wednesday. for tomorrow, we have the rain with a sun cloud mix. on wednesday, the rainfall develops. it could be heavy at times.

here is the forecast model showing you the showers tomorrow morning and then a break tuesday. look what happens as we take this into wednesday. the yellows and oranges move- in, indicating heavy rainfall rates. for tomorrow, mainly in the 50s. keep the umbrella nearby for the first half of the day and then we are watching a stronger storm for wednesday that could linger into thursday. if you are thinking about next weekend, it looks dry. >> we had a really dry december so we have some making up to do.>> we do. a key highway along the california coast that was swamped by deadly mudslides reopened today. highway 101 has been cleared of mud in santa barbara county. traffic began moving their at noon today. crews worked around the clock

clearing drainage areas and repairing guardrails and signs. the highway had been closed since a january 9 mudslide that killed at least 21 people and destroyed hundreds of homes in montecito. the remains of a soldier from san francisco return home after almost 70 years. we will tell you about the man who was killed just days after the start of the korean war.

the remains of a soldier from san francisco are finally home 67 years after his death.>> james leonard jr. was killed in action in the korean war. ktvu's leigh martinez tells us his remains were not recovered until last spring.>> army private first class's james leonard junior gave his life for his country. not in any recent war but in 1950 during the first few days of the korean war. the surviving members of his

family came to san francisco international airport to finally bring him home.>> he was only 22 years old. he had his whole life ahead of him. >> reporter: james leonard junior grew up in san francisco. he played the trumpet in polytechnic high school and was on the track team. his cousin is the last family member who knew him in life.>> i was not alive when he was. he was a very outgoing person.>> reporter: leonard joined the army at 22 years old. on july 20, he was sent to south korea to defend the city. it is believed just after five days of entering south korea, james leonard was killed in action.>> he is behind the lines.>> leonard's body was never found despite multiple searches. in the spring of 2017, a construction road crew

discovered teeth. 11 -- a lab in hawaii positively identified him.>> after that many years, they finally found him. they never gave up hope. >> the army flew him home with full military honors. it is a homecoming that vinyl he ended a families long anguishing mystery.>> it was hard. >> reporter: his sister died at just 10 years old and both his parents passed away years ago. leonard will be buried alongside his family at the holy cross cemetery. coming up, sports. we will be talking about the super bowl.
